COMMON QUESTIONS ABOUT
Business coaching basics
-
A business coach helps you think clearly, lead effectively and follow through on what matters most. At Bedrock Advising, your coach also brings consulting and business skills training, so you get a guide who adapts to what your business is facing, not a one-size-fits-all program.
-
A coach helps you think your way to better decisions and provides accountability to those decisions. A consultant brings answers, systems and frameworks.
The cleanest distinction is a consultant is hired to know. A coach is hired to think.
Most owners need both at different times, which is why every Bedrock Advising membership blends coaching, consulting and business skills training.

If you're the bottleneck for every decision, the business can't run a week without you, or you're busy but not building real value, a coach can help. Most owners already know what to do. What's missing is a trusted place to think it through and someone who expects an answer next time.
Here are some good indicators.
You might benefit from a coach if...
1. You're constantly working in the business.
You know you should be thinking strategically, but the urgent stuff keeps winning.2. You're the bottleneck.
Too many decisions, approvals, relationships, or problems still require you.3. You keep having the same conversations with yourself.
You know what needs to change, but somehow six months later you're still talking about it.4. Growth has created problems you haven't experienced before.
What worked at $1M doesn't necessarily work at $3M. Your old instincts and habits may no longer fit the business.5. You're making important decisions alone.
Not because you don't have smart people around you, but because you're ultimately the person carrying the consequences.6. Your leadership team isn't operating the way you hoped.
You may have good people but unclear accountability, poor communication, conflict avoidance, or inconsistent execution.7. The business is succeeding but you're not sure what you're building.
Revenue is up. The team is bigger. But you haven't really decided what the business is supposed to become.8. You suspect the business could be worth significantly more than it currently is.
Not necessarily because you need more revenue, but because the business isn't yet independent, predictable, profitable, or transferable enough to be a meaningful asset. -
Yes, but not automatically.
Business coaching is worth it when it changes the quality of decisions an owner makes, the behaviour of the leadership team, or the execution of the business enough to create more value than the coaching costs.
Business coaching is worth it when the cost of staying the same is higher than the cost of getting help to change.
For a business owner, that might mean:
Making a strategic decision you have been avoiding for 18 months.
Turning a business that depends on you into one with a capable leadership team.
Increasing margins rather than simply chasing more revenue.
Installing accountability and management rhythms that actually stick.
Getting you out of day-to-day firefighting.
Making a major hire, restructure, acquisition, or succession decision with more clarity.
Ultimately building a more valuable business asset, not just making you feel more motivated.
Where coaching often isn't worth it is when it's essentially:
only motivational pep talks
generic frameworks
advice on things you already know you should do
someone asking, "So, what do you think?" every two weeks
endless strategy conversations with no implementation
buying advice because you feel stuck, without actually changing anything
-
Simply because real transformation happens one-on-one. Group environments are great for inspiration and connection, and you will always value that.
But when you are ready for serious movement, accountability, and game changing action, nothing replaces the intensity and precision of one-on-one coaching. -
In most places you are looking, they don’t. Business coaching isn’t a regulated trade. This creates problems in our industry of unqualified people peddling advice and big coaching companies hiring anyone with a pulse.
At Bedrock Advising we hold FIRM that our team of coaches are people who are dedicated professionals. People dedicated to being excellent at their craft - like you with your business. Our coaches have pursued formal education and have received formal accreditation with the International Coaching Federation (ICF).
-
If you are starting from zero with little to no experience with your industry, you might start with an industry consultant. Or if you are looking for very specific industry advice on something like what equipment to buy, you might engage short-term an industry consultant.
The key question is what problem are you hiring the coach to solve.
For many business owners, industry-specific knowledge is less important than business-specific thinking.
More industry knowledge often makes coaching worse, not better. It can increase the likelihood a business coach is really just recycling industry advice and sharing the industry knowledge you are already know.
Business coaching provides wisdom, more than knowledge. At Bedrock Advising our work is to challenge you, reframe your thinking, and expand your capacity. We guide you toward the version of you and your business that has never existed before.
-
Many of our coaches have spent time at industry specific coaching companies. These are great places to learn some basics and helpful tips and tricks for your type of business.
The best coaches gravitate to an industry agnostic model for a reason. The truth is, business coach professionals want to work at a more sophisticated level with a client capable of more. That client is someone who has graduated past industry specific coaching.
Escaping industry group think is how you level up. You do not grow by becoming another version of everyone else in your industry. You grow by surrounding yourself with different thinkers, new frameworks, and ideas from outside your bubble, and applying them to build something uniquely powerful.
-
The truth is most business coaches have run a business. Although some of the best have learned the trade from corporate leadership roles where they have experienced similar levels of “ownership” of results.
Great business coaches aren’t always the most prolific business owners. Just like some of the best sports coaches weren’t superstar athletes. Coaching is different than doing. It’s an entirely different skillset. It is a great rule of thumb to look for knowledge and experience that complements the entrepreneurial drive you have.
A general rule of thumb is to approach “guru coaching” with a healthy level of skepticism. You don’t need a hero in your story, that’s already you. If the pitch is they have been wildly successful and all you need to do is what they did - that might be problematic. That’s like a world-class athelte saying “just play the game Iike I do”.
